Transfer of pension benefits

When working abroad you will have to consider various regulations. There are matters to consider that affect your pension.

Netherlands
If you change employer within the Netherlands, you may also have to change pension fund. This will usually cause a break in your pension. In order to prevent this, you can apply for a transfer of benefits from your old pension fund to your new pension fund. Please do so within the first 6 months of your new position.

Note: Dutch law prohibits transfer of benefits if one or both pension funds do not have sufficient coverage ratio. Apply for transfer of pension benefits anyway. As soon as both pension funds have sufficient coverage ratios, your application will be processed.

International
If you start working abroad, you can hardly avoid a break in your pension. Pension agreements are rules between employers and employees, based on Civic Law. From an international point of view, they often lack a proper policy. Often, only national regulations remain. Each country, whether a member of the European Union or not, has its own set of rulings.

Within the European Union, the Netherlands is one of the few (member) countries where specific rules towards international value transfers/ transition of accrued pension were deployed.
